Data Strategy

Project Goal

With the proliferation of data from all parts of our L&D ecosystems, it is important for L&D professionals to understand the data they need to collect. My course was built to help all levels of instructional designers, from the beginner to the expert, learn more about data strategy. The course is designed for those who have not performed a data strategy or used data significantly in their projects to track performance improvement. The topics covered in this course include: “What is data strategy?,” “Identifying performance objectives,” “Conducting data strategy sessions,” and “Documenting data strategy.” The course uses scenarios to allow the learners to practice for a data strategy session. Based on the scoring of their scenario sessions, additional content links (Youtube, LinkedIn Learning, Conference Session Recordings, etc.) will be provided to assist learners in mastering the topics.

Design Rationale

Problem-SolvingLearners will need to select the appropriate team based on their persona. This will help the learners use critical thinking to select appropriate teams based on their role.
StorytellingThe course is built around a fictitious problem, and the learner is immersed in this story throughout the course. Learners have a description of the scenario and are provided details about the problem they are trying to solve. The learner is given a real-world type of story to help them align the data strategy methodology to the situation. Learners should walk away feeling more comfortable with the type of information they are looking to collect.
ScenariosLearners are given scenarios to practice their interviewing skills and work through collecting information for their data strategy. Learners are also provided with a mock interview scenario with key stakeholders to ask questions and dig into details for the given problem. This scenario allows the learner to practice selecting the right questions in a safe environment with feedback provided.
Case StudiesA completed project and allows learners to deconstruct a project to review how selections were made. Interactive elements in Storyline will allow learners to develop their data strategy using common techniques for strategy facilitation. The case study allows the learner to see how a data strategy was put together and reverse engineer the process before they try it themselves.

Outcome

For this project, I built an Articulate Storyline course that utilized the design rationale above to let learners deconstruct a case study. Feedback was provided throughout the activity to guide the learner in the appropriate data strategy selections.

Learners were then provided with the opportunity to work through a scenario. The scenario had them selecting their team for a data strategy session. Learners can can get more information about each potential participant and select 3 participants for the session.

Once the learner submits, they get feedback on their selection and the chance to select again if necessary. Everything on the screen is tracked using xAPI so we are able to see how many rounds it takes to select the right team and how often the learner uses the Profile buttons.

After the team is selected, the learner will select the systems that will provide data and then selects questions to ask the team about their data needs. The scenario allows the learner to select a series of questions if the learner gets too far off track, feedback is given, and the learner is allowed to try again. We are giving the learner a safe place to fail and try again. We are also collecting data for all interactions in the scenario to gather information on how the learner interacts with the scenario.
